LukeChapter 19 And behold, there was a man whose name was called Zaccheus; and he was a chief 1tax collector, and he was rich.
And he was seeking to see Jesus, who He was, and could not because of the crowd, for he was small in stature.
And he ran on ahead and climbed up in a 1sycamore tree in order to see Him, for He was about to pass through that way.
And as He came to the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, Zaccheus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay in your house.
And he hurried and came down, and received Him, rejoicing.
And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, He has gone in to lodge with a sinful man.
And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, because he 1also is a son of Abraham.
And when he came back, having received the kingdom, he commanded that those slaves to whom he had given the money should be called to him so that he might know what they had gained by doing business.
And the first appeared, saying, Master, your mina has gained ten minas.
And he said to him, Well done, good slave. Because you have become faithful in the least, 1have authority over ten cities.
And the second came, saying, Your mina, master, has made five minas.
For I was afraid of you, because you are a 1harsh man: you withdraw what you did not deposit, and you reap what you did not sow.
He said to him, Out of your mouth I will 1judge you, wicked slave. You knew that I am a harsh man, withdrawing what I did not deposit and reaping what I did not sow.
Why then did you not put my money 1in the bank, and when I came, I would have collected it with interest?
And to those standing by he said, Take the mina away from him, and give it to the one who has the ten minas.
And they said to him, Master, he has ten minas.
I tell you that to everyone who has, more shall be given, but from him who does not have, even that which he has shall be taken away.
However, these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring them here and 1slay them before me.
1And as He drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, near the mount which is called Olivet, He sent two of the disciples,
Saying, Go into the village opposite you, in which, as you are entering, you will find a colt tied, on which no man has ever yet sat; untie it and lead it here.
And if anyone asks you, Why are you untying it? thus shall you say, Because the Lord has need of it.
And those who were sent went away and found it even as He had told them.
And as they were untying the colt, its masters said to them, Why are you untying the colt?
And they said, Because the Lord has need of it.
And they brought it to Jesus. And when they had thrown their garments on the colt, they put Jesus on it.
And as He was already drawing near to the descent of the Mount of Olives, all the multitude of the disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the works of power which they had seen,
Saying, Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!
And some of the Pharisees from the crowd said to Him, Teacher, rebuke Your disciples.
And He answered and said, I tell you, If these shall be silent, the stones will cry out.
And as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it,
Saying, If you knew in this day, even you, the things that are for your 1peace! But now they have been hidden from your eyes.
For the days will come upon you when your enemies will throw up a rampart before you, and will encircle you, and will press you in on every side,
And He entered into the temple and began to cast out those who were selling,
Saying to them, It is written, “And My house shall be a house of prayer,” but you have made it a den of robbers.
And He taught daily in the temple. But the chief priests and the scribes and the leaders of the people sought to destroy Him;
Yet they could not find anything that they might do, for all the people were hanging upon Him, listening.
LukeChapter 20 And on one of the days, as 1He was teaching the people in the temple and announcing the good news, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders came upon Him,
And spoke, saying to Him, Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who is the one who gave you this authority?
And He answered and said to them, I also will ask you one thing, and you tell Me:
The baptism of John, was it from heaven or from men?
And they reasoned together among themselves, saying, If we say, From heaven, He will say, Why did you not believe him?
But if we say, From men, all the people will stone us to death, for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.
And they answered that they did not know where it was from.
1And He began to speak to the people this parable: A certain man planted a vineyard and leased it out to vinedressers and went abroad for a considerable time.
And at the proper time he sent a slave to the vinedressers so that they might give him some of the fruit of the vineyard; but the vinedressers beat him and sent him away empty-handed.
And he went on to send another slave, but they beat that one also, and dishonored him, and sent him away empty-handed.
And he went on to send a third, but that one also they wounded and threw out.
And the master of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son, the beloved; they will 1probably respect this one.
But when the vinedressers saw him, they reasoned with one another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him that the inheritance may become ours.
And they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What then will the master of the vineyard do to them?
He will come and destroy these vinedressers and will give the vineyard to others. And when they heard this, they said, May it never happen!
But He looked at them, and said, What then is this that is written, “The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner”?
Everyone who falls on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it shall crush him to powder and scatter him like chaff.
And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on Him in that hour; yet they feared the people, for they perceived that it was with them in view that He spoke this parable.
1And they watched Him closely and sent spies who feigned themselves to be righteous, in order that they might lay hold on some word of His, so as to deliver Him up to the rule and authority of the governor.
And they questioned Him, saying, Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly, 1and do not accept man's person, but teach the way of God in truth.
Is it lawful for us to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?
But He perceived their craftiness and said to them,
Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have? And they said, Caesar's.
And He said to them, Therefore render the things that are Caesar's to Caesar, and the things that are God's to God.
And they were not able to lay hold of a saying of His in the presence of the people; and marveling at His answer, they kept silent.
Saying, Teacher, Moses wrote for us, If anyone's brother has a wife and dies, and this one is childless, his brother should take the wife and raise up seed to his brother.
There were then seven brothers. And the first took a wife and died childless;
And the third took her; and similarly the seven also did not leave children and died.
Finally the woman also died.
In the resurrection, therefore, which one's wife does the woman become? For the seven had her as wife.
And Jesus said to them, The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage,
But those who are counted worthy to obtain that 1age and the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage;
For neither can they die anymore, for they are equal to angels, and they are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.
But that the dead are raised, even Moses disclosed in the section concerning the bush, when he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.
Now He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to Him all men are living.
And some of the scribes answered and said, Teacher, You have spoken well.
For David himself says in the book of Psalms, "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand,
Until I set Your enemies as a footstool for Your feet.”
And as all the people were listening, He said to His disciples,
1Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes, and love greetings in the marketplaces and chief seats in the synagogues and places of honor at the dinners,
