27~44 The Ascendancy and Wisdom of Paul in Contrast to the Baseness and Folly of the Sailors and Soldiers
But when the fourteenth night came, as we were being driven about in the Adriatic Sea, about the middle of the night the sailors suspected that some land was approaching them.
And they took soundings and found it to be twenty fathoms; and when they had gone a little farther, they sounded again and found it to be fifteen fathoms.
And fearing that we might run aground somewhere on rocky places, they threw four anchors from the stern and wished for day to come.
And when the sailors sought to flee from the ship, having lowered the small boat into the sea under pretense of intending to lay out anchors from the bow,
Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, Unless these men remain in the ship, you cannot be saved.
Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the small boat and let it fall away.
And until day was about to come, Paul encouraged them all to take some food, saying, Today is the fourteenth day that you have continued watching without food, taking nothing.
Therefore I encourage you to take some food, for this is for your salvation; for not a hair from the head of any one of you shall perish.
And when he had said these things and had taken bread, he gave thanks to God before all; and he broke it and began to eat.
And all became cheerful, and they also took food.
Now we were in all two hundred and seventy-six souls in the ship.
And when they were satisfied with food, they began to lighten the ship, throwing out the wheat into the sea.
And when day came, they could not recognize the land, but they noticed a certain bay, which had a beach, into which they took counsel to drive the ship, if they were able.
And casting off the anchors, they left them in the sea, at the same time loosening the bands of the rudders; and hoisting the foresail to the blowing of the wind, they held course for the beach.
But striking a sandbar with the sea on both sides, they ran the vessel aground; and the bow stuck fast and remained immovable, but the stern was broken up by the violence of the waves. 兵丁的意思是要把囚犯杀了,恐怕有人泅水逃走;
And the counsel of the soldiers was that they should kill the prisoners, lest anyone swim away and escape; 但百夫长愿意叫保罗安全得救,不准他们任意而行,就吩咐会泅水的,跳下水去先上岸;
But the centurion, intending to bring Paul safely through, prevented them from their intention and ordered those who were able to swim to throw themselves overboard first and get to the land,
And the rest to follow, some on planks, and others on some of the things from the ship. And so it happened that all were brought safely through onto the land.

1 The Third Round of Debates 1~34 Job's Conclusion concerning Prosperity and Calamity in Human Life a 约伯平息他朋友的话 1~6 His Calming Word to His Friends
Then Job answered and said,
Listen carefully to my word, / And let this be your consolations.
Bear with me, and I will speak; / And after I have spoken, mock on.
As for me, is my complaint to man? / And why should my spirit not be impatient?
Look at me and be appalled; / And put your hand over your mouth.
Even when I remember, I am troubled, / And horror takes hold of my flesh. b 7~16 The Prosperity of the Wicked
Why do the wicked live, / Grow old, even become mighty in riches?
Their seed is established with them in their sight, / And their offspring, before their eyes.
Their houses are free from dread, / And the rod of God is not upon them.
Their bull breeds and does not fail; / Their cow calves and does not miscarry.
They send forth their little ones like a herd, / And their children dance.
They lift up their voices to the tambourine and lyre, / And they rejoice at the sound of the flute.
They spend their days in prosperity, / And in a moment they go down into Sheol.
And they say unto God, Depart from us, / For we do not desire the knowledge of Your ways.
What is the Almighty, that we should serve Him? / And what profit is there, that we should pray to Him?
Indeed, their prosperity is not in their own hand. / The counsel of the wicked is far from Him. c 17~34 Job's Questions concerning God's Recompense to the Wicked
How often is the lamp of the wicked put out, / So that their calamity comes upon them, / So that God distributes sorrows in His anger?
Do they become like straw before the wind / And like chaff that the storm carries off?
You say, God stores up the punishment of his iniquity for his children. / I say, Let Him recompense him, so that he knows it.
Let his eyes see his destruction, / And let him drink the wrath of the Almighty.
For what is there for him to delight in, in his house after him, / When the number of his months is cut off?
Will someone teach knowledge to God, / Seeing that He judges those who are on high? 有人至死仍然力气充足,尽得平靖安逸;
One dies in his full strength, / Being completely at ease and quiet;
His pails are full of milk, / And the marrow of his bones is moist.
But another dies in bitterness of soul / And does not taste of good.
They lie down alike in the dust, / And the worm covers them.
Indeed, I know your thoughts, / And the devices by which you would wrong me.
For you say, Where is the house of the prince? / Where is the tent of the dwellings of the wicked?
Have you not asked those who travel the roads? / And do you not regard their evidence,
That the wicked man is spared in the day of calamity, / That they are led forth at the day of overflowing wrath?
Who will declare his way to his face? / And who will repay him what he has done?
When he is borne to the grave, / A watch is kept over the tomb.
The clods of the valley are sweet to him; / And all men go in procession after him, / And those who went before him are without number.
Why then do you comfort me with vanity? / For your responses leave only falsehood behind. 1~30 Eliphaz's Logic concerning the Recompense of Good and Evil
And Eliphaz the Temanite answered and said, 人岂能对神有益呢?
Can a man of might be of any use to God? / No, a man of insight is of use only to himself.
Is it a matter of delight to the Almighty that you are righteous? / Or is it a gain to Him that you make your ways perfect?
Is it because of your fear of Him that He reproves you, / That He enters into judgment with you?
Is not your wickedness great, / And is there no end to your iniquities?
For you have taken pledges from your brothers without cause / And stripped the naked of their clothing.
You have not given water to the weary to drink, / And you have withheld bread from the hungry.
And as for the man of power, the earth was his; / And the man of honor dwelt in it.
You have sent away the widows empty, / And the arms of the orphans have been crushed. 因此,有网罗环绕你,有恐惧忽然使你惊惶;
Therefore snares are all around you; / And sudden dread troubles you,
Or darkness, so that you cannot see; / And an abundance of waters covers you.
Is not God at the height of heaven? / And look at the highest of the stars, how lofty they are!
And you say, What does God know? / Can He judge through the deep darkness?
Thick clouds are a covering to Him, so He cannot see; / And He walks upon the circle of the heavens. 你要依从古往的道路么?这道路是恶人所行的;
Will you keep the old way, / Which wicked men have trodden? 他们未到死期,就被攫去,他们的根基好像江河溃泻;
Such were snatched away before their time, / Whose foundation was poured forth like a stream;
Who said to God, Depart from us; / And, What can the Almighty accomplish for us?
Yet He fills their houses with good things. / But the counsel of the wicked is far from Him.
The righteous see and rejoice, / And the innocent deride them,
Saying, Surely those who rose up against us are cut off, / And the remnant of them the fire has devoured.
Be well disposed to Him and at peace with Him; / By such, good will come upon you.
Receive instruction from His mouth, / And lay up His words in your heart.
If you return to the Almighty, you will be built up. / If you put injustice far away from your tents,
And place your gold nuggets in the dust / And your gold of Ophir in the stones of the brooks,
Then the Almighty will be your gold nuggets / And precious silver to you.
For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty, / And you will lift up your countenance to God.
You will pray to Him, and He will hear you; / And you will repay your vows.
You will also decree something, and it will be established for you; / And light will shine on your ways.
When they cast you down, you will say, I am up! / And the lowly person He will save.
He will deliver him who is not innocent; / Yes, you will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands. |
