(The First Warning — Give Heed to What Is Spoken concerning the Son HebrewsChapter 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved firm and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense,
God bearing witness with them both by signs and wonders and by various works of power and by 1distributions of the Holy Spirit according to His will?
For it was not to angels that He subjected the coming 1inhabited earth, concerning which we speak.
But one has solemnly testified somewhere, saying, 1"What is man, that You bring him to mind? Or the son of man, that You care for him?
You have made Him 1a little inferior to the angels; You have crowned Him with glory and honor and have set Him over the works of Your hands;
You have subjected all things under His feet.” For in subjecting all things to Him, He left nothing unsubject to Him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to Him,
And again, “I will trust in Him.” And again, “Behold, I and the children whom God has given to Me.”
Since therefore the children have shared in blood and flesh, He also Himself in like manner partook of the same, that through death He might 1destroy him who has the might of death, that is, the devil,
And might 1release those who because of the fear of death through all their life were held in slavery.
For being tempted in that which He Himself has suffered, He is able to help those who are being tempted.
JeremiahChapter 40 The word which came to Jeremiah from Jehovah after Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had let him go from Ramah, when he had taken him while he was bound in chains among all the exiles of Jerusalem and Judah, who were being exiled to Babylon.
Now the captain of the bodyguard had taken Jeremiah and said to him, Jehovah your God spoke this evil against this place.
And Jehovah has caused it to come to pass and done as He had spoken, because all of you have sinned against Jehovah and have not listened to His voice; therefore this thing has come upon you.
And now I release you today from the chains which are on your hands. If it is good in your sight to come to Babylon with me, come, and I will look after you; but if it is evil in your sight to come with me to Babylon, let it be so. See, all the land is before you; wherever it is good and right in your sight to go, there go.
While he had still not turned away, he said, Return to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, whom the king of Babylon has appointed over the cities of Judah, and dwell with him among the people; or go wherever it is right in your sight to go. And the captain of the bodyguard gave him an allowance of food and a present and let him go.
And Jeremiah came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam at Mizpah and dwelt with him among the people who were left in the land.
And when all the captains of the forces that were in the field, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had appointed Gedaliah the son of Ahikam over the land and had committed to him men and women and little children and those of the poor of the land who had not been exiled to Babylon,
They came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, that is, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.
And Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, swore to them and to their men, saying, Do not be afraid to serve the Chaldeans; dwell in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will be well with you.
Now as for me, I will dwell in Mizpah to stand before the Chaldeans who come to us; but you, gather wine and summer fruit and oil and put them in your storage vessels, and dwell in your cities which you have taken.
And all the Jews who were in Moab and among the children of Ammon and in Edom and who were in all the lands also heard that the king of Babylon had left a remnant of Judah and had appointed over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan.
And all the Jews returned from all the places to which they had been driven and came to the land of Judah, to Gedaliah at Mizpah, and gathered wine and summer fruit in great abundance.
And Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces who were in the field came to Gedaliah at Mizpah.
And they said to him, Are you at all aware that Baalis the king of the children of Ammon has sent Ishmael the son of Nethaniah to take your life? But 1Gedaliah the son of Ahikam would not believe them.
Then Johanan the son of Kareah spoke secretly to Gedaliah in Mizpah, saying, Let me go and strike Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and no one will know. Why should he take your life and all the Jews who are gathered to you be scattered and the remnant of Judah perish?
But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said to Johanan the son of Kareah, Do not do this thing, for you are speaking falsehood concerning Ishmael.
JeremiahChapter 41 And in the seventh month Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the royal family and one of the chief officers of the king, and ten men with him came to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam at Mizpah. And there they ate bread together in Mizpah.
Then Ishmael the son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him rose up and struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword and put him to death, whom the king of Babylon had appointed governor in the land.
And Ishmael also struck down all the Jews who were with him, that is, with Gedaliah in Mizpah, as well as the Chaldeans who were found there, the men of war.
And on the next day after he had put Gedaliah to death, and no one knew about it,
Men came from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men, with shaved beards and torn garments, having cut themselves and having meal offerings and incense in their hand to bring to the house of Jehovah.
And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went; and as he met them he said to them, Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.
And when they came into the midst of the city, Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, he and the men who were with him, slaughtered them and cast them into the pit.
But ten men were found among them who said to Ishmael, Do not kill us, for we have hidden stores of wheat and barley and oil and honey in the field. So he refrained and did not put them to death along with their brothers.
And the pit into which Ishmael cast all the corpses of the men whom he had slain because of Gedaliah (it was the one which Asa the king had made on account of Baasha the king of Israel), Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled with the slain.
Then Ishmael took captive all the remnant of the people who were in Mizpah: the king's daughters and all the people who were left in Mizpah, whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the bodyguard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam; so Ishmael the son of Nethaniah took them captive and went out to cross over to the children of Ammon.
But when Johanan the son of Kareah and all the leaders of the forces who were with him heard of all the evil which Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done,
They took all the men and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and they found him by the great pool which was in Gibeon.
And when all the people who were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces who were with him, they rejoiced.
And so all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive from Mizpah turned around and came back and went to Johanan the son of Kareah.
But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men and went to the children of Ammon.
Then Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces with him took all the remnant of the people whom he brought back from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after he had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam: mighty men, men of war, and women and little children and eunuchs whom he brought back from Gibeon.
And they went and stayed in Geruth Chimham, which is near Bethlehem, in order to go and enter into 1Egypt
Because of the Chaldeans; for they were afraid of them since Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
