Scripture Reading: 2 Sam. 7:12-14a, 16; Matt. 16:18; Eph. 3:16-17a, 19b
Ⅰ
If we would know the intrinsic constitution of the building of God, the eyes of our heart must be enlightened, and we need to anoint our eyes with eyesalve that we may see—Eph. 1:17-18; Rev. 3:17-18:
A
Paul prayed that we would have a spirit of wisdom and revelation and that the eyes of our heart would be enlightened—Eph. 1:17-18:
1
The eyes of our heart are the spiritual eyes, the spiritual faculty to see— Acts 26:18.
2
In order to have eyes to see the divine things, we need an open spirit, a purified conscience, a pure heart, a sober mind, a fervent emotion, and a submissive will—Matt. 5:3, 8; Heb. 9:14; 10:22; 2 Tim. 1:7; John 14:21; 7:17.
B
The Lord Jesus counsels us to buy from Him eyesalve to anoint our eyes that we may see—Rev. 3:17-18:
1
The eyesalve needed to anoint our eyes must be the anointing Spirit, who is the Lord Himself as the life-giving Spirit—1 John 2:27; 1 Cor. 15:45b.
2
If we anoint our eyes with the anointing Spirit, we will have the revelation of the Holy Spirit—2:10:
a
Spiritual insight is always related to the Spirit; without touching the Spirit we cannot deal with spiritual things—vv. 11-15.
b
We need the Spirit to anoint the depths of our inner being so that we may have the deep insight to see things from within—1 John 2:20.
Ⅱ
If we would experience the intrinsic constitution of the building of God, we need to be vessels open to the Lord and allow Christ to make His home in our hearts—Rom. 9:23; 2 Cor. 4:7; Eph. 3:16-17a, 19b:
A
The Lord needs us to be vessels who are always open to be filled with Him— v. 19b:
1
If the vessel is open, God can fulfill His purpose, but if the vessel is closed, God's purpose will be frustrated.
2
We are vessels of mercy containing the indwelling Christ as our treasure— Rom. 9:23; 2 Cor. 4:7.
3
The Lord wants us to love Him, to be open to Him, and to let Him live from within us—Gal. 2:20.
B
We need to allow Christ, who is the life-giving Spirit in our spirit, to make His home in our hearts—1 Cor. 15:45b; 6:17; 2 Tim. 4:22a; Eph. 3:16-17a:
1
As Christ makes His home in our hearts, He occupies the parts of our inner being and saturates them with Himself.
2
When Christ makes His home in our hearts, we will be filled unto all the fullness of God—the Body of Christ as the corporate expression of the Triune God—v. 19b.
Ⅲ
If we would know and experience the intrinsic constitution of the building of God, we need a spiritual understanding of the following crucial matters— Col. 1:9:
A
In the beginning of the New Testament, Christ is introduced first as the Son of David to fulfill God's covenant with David in 2 Samuel 7—Matt. 1:1; 9:27; 12:23; 15:22; 20:30-31; 21:9, 15; 22:42, 45:
1
Christ is the Root and the Offspring of David; in His divinity Christ is the Root, the source, of David, and in His humanity Christ is the Offspring, the issue, of David—Rev. 22:16.
2
Christ is the real David—Matt. 12:3-4:
a
The prophets spoke of David and Christ as one—Jer. 30:9; Ezek. 34:23-24; 37:24-25; Hosea 3:5; Amos 9:11.
b
David's house refers to Christ, David's kingdom refers to Christ's king-dom, and David's throne refers to Christ's throne—2 Sam. 7:16.
B
David wanted to build God a house, but God wanted to build Himself into David— vv. 2-3, 12-14a, 16.
C
The intrinsic significance of 2 Samuel 7 is that the Triune God is working Himself in His processed and consummated Trinity into His chosen people; therefore, 2 Samuel 7 is a chapter on the Triune God working Himself into us to make us His home:
1
We need to let God work Christ as the Spirit into every part of our being so that we will be constituted with Christ—Eph. 3:16-17a.
2
What God is building into us will be His abode and also our abode—a mutual abode—John 14:23; 15:4.
3
God will have a dwelling place not by our doing or working but by His building—Matt. 16:18:
a
Christ builds the church by coming into our spirit and spreading Him-self into our mind, emotion, and will to occupy our entire soul.
b
Eventually, the Triune God will become our intrinsic constitution.
c
God in Christ is within us to build Himself into our being and to build us into His being; He builds His divinity into our humanity and builds our humanity into His divinity in order to mingle and blend His divinity with our humanity into one entity.
d
Ultimately the Triune God and redeemed humanity will be mingled, blended, and built up to be one entity—the New Jerusalem—Rev. 21:2.
