¹That which was  ²from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we  ³beheld and our hands  ⁴handled, concerning the  ⁵Word of  ⁶life

(And the  ¹life was  ²manifested, and we have seen and testify and report to you  ³the eternal life, which was  ⁴with the  ⁵Father and was  ⁶manifested to us);

That which we have  ¹seen and heard we report also to you that you  ²also may have  ³fellowship with us, and indeed our fellowship is with the  ⁴Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

And these things we write that  ¹our  ²joy may be made full.

 ¹And this is the message which we have heard from Him and announce to you, that  ²God is  ³light and in Him is no  ⁴darkness at all.

If we say that we  ¹have fellowship  ²with Him and yet  ³walk in the darkness, we  ⁴lie and are not  ⁵practicing the  ⁶truth;

But if we walk in the light as He  ¹is in the light, we  ²have fellowship with one another, and the  ³blood of  ⁴Jesus His Son  ⁵cleanses us from every  ⁶sin.

If we say that we  ¹do not have sin,  ²we are deceiving ourselves, and the  ³truth is not in us.

If we  ¹confess our sins, He is  ²faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and  ³cleanse us from all  ⁴unrighteousness.

If we say that we  ¹have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His  ²word is not in us.

My  ¹little children,  ²these things I write to you that you  ³may not sin. And if anyone  ⁴sins, we have an  ⁵Advocate  ⁶with the  ⁷Father, Jesus Christ the  ⁸Righteous;

And He Himself is the  ¹propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for those of the  ²whole world.

 ¹And in this we  ²know that we  ³know Him, if we keep His  ⁴commandments.

He who says, I know Him, and does not keep His commandments is a  ¹liar, and the  ²truth is not in this one;

But whoever keeps His  ¹word, truly in this one the  ²love of God has been  ³perfected. In this we know that we are  ⁴in Him.

He who says he  ¹abides in Him ought himself also to walk even as  ²He walked.

Beloved, I am not writing a new commandment to you but an  ¹old commandment, which you have had  ²from the beginning; the old commandment is the word which you heard.

Yet again a  ¹new commandment I am writing to you,  ²which is true in Him and in you because the  ³darkness is passing away and the true light is already shining.

He who says he is in the  ¹light and yet hates his brother is in the darkness until now.

He who loves his brother  ¹abides in the  ²light, and there is no cause of stumbling in him;

But he who  ¹hates his brother is in the darkness and walks in the darkness and does not know where he is  ²going, because the darkness has  ³blinded his eyes.

I write to you,  ¹little children, because your sins have been  ²forgiven you because of His name.

I write to you,  ¹fathers, because you  ²know  ³Him who is  ⁴from the beginning. I write to you,  ⁵young men, because you have  ⁶overcome the  ⁷evil one. I  ⁸write to you,  ⁹young children, because you know the  ¹⁰Father.

I have  ¹written to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because  ²you are strong and the word of God abides in you and you have overcome the  ³evil one.

 ¹Do not love the  ²world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world,  ³love for the  ⁴Father is not in him;

Because all that is in the world, the  ¹lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the vainglory of  ²life, is not of the Father but is of the world.

And the world is passing away, and its  ¹lust, but he who  ²does the  ¹will of God abides forever.

 ¹Young children, it is the last hour; and even as you heard that  ²antichrist is coming, even now  ³many antichrists have come; whereby we know that it is the last hour.

They went out from us, but they were  ¹not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have  ²remained with us; but they went out that they might be manifested that they all are not of us.

And you have an  ¹anointing from the Holy One, and  ²all of you know.

I have not written to you because you do not know the  ¹truth, but because you  ²know it and because no lie is of the  ¹truth.

Who is the liar if not he who  ¹denies that  ²Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son.

Everyone who  ¹denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who confesses the Son has the Father also.

As for you,  ¹that which you heard  ²from the beginning, let it abide in you. If that which you heard  ²from the beginning abides in you, you also will  ³abide in the Son and in the Father.

And this is the promise which  ¹He Himself  ²promised us, the  ³eternal life.

These things I have written to you  ¹concerning those who  ²lead you astray.

And as for you, the  ¹anointing which you have received from  ²Him  ³abides in you, and you have  ⁴no need that anyone teach you; but as  ²His anointing  ⁵teaches you concerning  ⁶all things and is  ⁷true and is not a lie, and even as it has taught you,  ⁸abide in  ²Him.

And now,  ¹little children,  ²abide in Him, so that if  ³He is manifested, we may have boldness and not be  ⁴put to shame  ⁵from Him  ⁶at His coming.

If you  ¹know that  ²He is  ³righteous,  ⁴you  ⁵know that everyone who  ⁶practices righteousness also has been  ⁷begotten of Him.

 ¹Behold what manner of  ²love the  ³Father has given to us, that we should be called  ⁴children of God; and we are.  ⁵Because of this the world does not  ⁶know us,  ⁷because it did not know Him.

Beloved, now we are children of God, and  ¹it has not yet been manifested what we will be. We  ²know that if  ³He is manifested, we will be like Him because we will  ⁴see Him even as  ³He is.

And everyone who has  ¹this hope set on Him  ²purifies himself, even as  ³He is pure.

Everyone who  ¹practices sin practices  ²lawlessness also, and sin is lawlessness.

And you know that He was manifested that He might  ¹take away sins; and sin is not in  ²Him.

Everyone who  ¹abides in Him  ²does not sin; everyone who  ³sins  ⁴has not seen Him or known Him.

 ¹Little children, let no one  ²lead you astray; he who  ³practices righteousness is  ⁴righteous, even as He is righteous;

He who  ¹practices sin is of the  ²devil, because the devil has sinned  ³from the beginning.  ⁴For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might  ⁵destroy the works of the devil.

Everyone who has been  ¹begotten of God does  ²not practice sin, because His  ³seed abides in him; and he  ⁴cannot sin, because he has been begotten of God.

 ¹In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest.

Everyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, neither he who does not  ²love his brother.

For this is the  ¹message which you heard  ²from the beginning, that we should  ³love one another,

Not as Cain was  ¹of the  ²evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his works were evil, and his brother's, righteous.

Do not marvel, brothers, if the  ¹world hates you.

We know that we have passed out of  ¹death into life because we love the brothers. He who does  ²not love abides in death.

Everyone who  ¹hates his brother is a  ²murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.

In this we know love, that He laid down His  ¹life on our behalf, and we ought to lay down our  ²lives on behalf of the brothers.

But whoever has the livelihood of the world and sees that his brother has need and shuts up his  ¹affections from him, how does the  ²love of God abide in him?

 ¹Little children, let us not love in word nor in tongue but in  ²deed and  ³truthfulness.

And in this we will know that we are of the  ¹truth, and we will  ²persuade our heart before Him,

Because if our  ¹heart blames us, it is because God is greater than our heart and knows all things.

Beloved, if our heart does not blame us, we have  ¹boldness toward God;

And  ¹whatever we ask we receive from Him because we  ²keep His commandments and  ³do the things that are pleasing in His sight.

And this is His  ¹commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, even as He gave a commandment to us.

And he who keeps His commandments  ¹abides in Him, and  ²He in him. And in this we know that He abides in us,  ³by the  ⁴Spirit whom He gave to us.

Beloved, do not believe  ¹every spirit, but  ²prove the spirits whether they are  ³of God, because many  ⁴false prophets have gone out into the world.

In this you know the Spirit of God: Every  ¹spirit which confesses that Jesus Christ has come  ²in the flesh is of God,

And every  ¹spirit which does not confess Jesus is not of God; and this is the spirit of the  ²antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming and now is already in the world.

You are  ¹of God,  ²little children; and you have overcome  ³them because greater is  ⁴He who is in you than  ⁵he who is in the world.

They are  ¹of the world; therefore they speak  ¹out of the world, and the world hears them.

We are  ¹of God; he who knows God hears us; he who is  ²not of God does not hear us.  ³From this we know the  ⁴Spirit of  ⁵truth and the  ⁴spirit of deception.

Beloved, let us  ¹love one another, because  ²love is of God, and everyone who  ³loves has been  ⁴begotten of God and  ⁵knows God.

He who does not love has  ¹not known God, because God is  ²love.

In this the love of God was manifested  ¹among us, that God sent His only begotten Son into the  ²world that we might  ³have life and live through Him.

 ¹Herein is love, not that we have loved God but that He loved us and sent His Son as a  ²propitiation for our sins.

Beloved, if God has loved us in this way, we also ought to  ¹love one another.

No one has  ¹beheld God at any time; if we  ²love one another, God abides in us, and  ³His love is  ⁴perfected in us.

In  ¹this we know that we  ²abide in Him and He in us, that He has given to us  ³of His Spirit.

And we have beheld and testify that the Father has  ¹sent the Son as the Savior of the  ²world.

Whoever  ¹confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him and he in God.

And we know and have believed the  ¹love which God has  ²in us. God is  ³love, and he who  ⁴abides in love  ⁵abides in God and  ⁶God abides in him.

In  ¹this has love been  ²perfected with us, that we may have  ³boldness in the day of the  ⁴judgment because even as  ⁵He is, so also are we in this world.

There is no  ¹fear in love, but  ²perfect love casts out fear because fear has punishment, and he who fears has  ³not been perfected in love.

We love because He  ¹first loved us.

If anyone says, I love God, and  ¹hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

And this commandment we have from Him, that he who loves God love his brother also.

Everyone who  ¹believes that Jesus is the Christ has been begotten of God, and everyone who loves Him who has begotten loves him also who has been begotten of Him.

In this we know that we love the children of God, when we  ¹love God and  ²do His commandments.

For this is the  ¹love of God, that we  ²keep His commandments; and His commandments are not  ³burdensome.

For  ¹everything that has been  ²begotten of God  ³overcomes the  ⁴world; and this is the victory which has overcome the world — our  ⁵faith.

And who is he who overcomes the world except him who  ¹believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

This is  ¹He who came through water and blood ², Jesus Christ; not  ³in the water only, but  ³in the water and  ³in the blood; and the Spirit is He who  ⁴testifies, because the Spirit is the  ⁵reality.

For there are three who testify,

The Spirit and the water and the blood, and the three are  ¹unto the one thing.

If we receive the testimony of men, the  ¹testimony of God is greater, because this is the testimony of God that He has testified concerning His Son.

He who  ¹believes into the Son of God has the testimony in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar because he has not believed in the testimony which God has testified concerning His Son.

And this is the testimony, that God  ¹gave to us eternal life and this life is in His Son.

He who  ¹has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have the life.

I have written  ¹these things to you that you may know that you have eternal life, to you who believe into the name of the Son of God.

And  ¹this is the  ²boldness which we have toward Him, that if we  ³ask anything according to His will, He hears us.

And if we  ¹know that He hears us in whatever we  ²ask, we know that we have the requests which we have asked from Him.

If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin not  ¹unto death, he shall  ²ask and he  ³will give  ⁴life to him, to those sinning not unto death. There is a  ⁵sin unto death; I do not say that he should make request concerning that.

All  ¹unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not unto death.

We know that everyone who is  ¹begotten of God does not sin, but  ²he who has been begotten of God  ³keeps himself, and the  ⁴evil one does not  ⁵touch him.

We know that we are  ¹of God, and the  ²whole world  ³lies in the  ⁴evil one.

And we know that the Son of God has  ¹come and has given us an  ²understanding that we might  ³know  ⁴Him who is  ⁵true; and we are  ⁶in Him who is true,  ⁷in His Son Jesus Christ.  ⁸This is the true God and eternal life.

 ¹Little children,  ²guard yourselves from  ³idols.
